I need to select text in a layer & it won’t select; it makes a new text layer.

Sometimes I can select text and revise it and other times I can’t. Is there something that I am doing wrong? Is there a function that I don’t know about that makes it work sometimes and not other times? Please advise. Thanks, Diane

Look at your Text cursor closely.

See the little horizontal crossbar near the bottom of the cursor? Move the cursor so that that crossbar is right next to the bottom of the first letter you want to select. Some fonts (old Letraset fonts were known for this) have non-standard height values and may prove to be a problem. Most fonts won’t though.

If you still have a problem, simply double click on the "T" icon in your text layer in the Layers Palette; this will select all the text in that layer. Then use the arrow keys to navigate where you want within the text.

Experiment with holding the SHIFT and CTRL keys —separately and together— while you’re navigating with the arrow keys. You’ll make a discovery about navigating and selecting text that works in almost all applications.

I tried what you said but it didn’t work. What’s strange is: there are two text boxes but only one text box has a "T" in it. The text box that won’t work has a picture of what it looks like. It’s not like a text box at all. But, I never changed anything so what could have happened to that text box? They both should be text boxes.

No "T" icon probably means that that text has been rasterized. If that is the case, then you won’t be able to edit it as text, because it’s now just letter-shaped pixels.

Other than that, I don’t know what to tell you.

Start over, perhaps?
