Hello – FYI – I open DWG files in Illustrator and then export to PSD with layers.

With that said:

I have noticed that when applying a layer Pattern Fill, with a selection active, to a layer that I create IN PS, the pattern fill & mask will be applied to the current layer – Like I want it to be.

If I do the same thing to a layer not native to PS (meaning imported from another program, ie. Illustrator), PS will make a completely new layer (just above the current layer) named "Pattern Fill ‘X’" with the pattern fill & mask applied to it.

The problem is that now I have 2 layers for each layer I want (The original (with linework on it) and the patterned layer. So I have to merge the two, but then I lose the edit ability of the pattern type and scale.

How can I make PS always apply the pattern fill (adjustment) to the current layer and not make a new layer for each fill?

Sorry so long winded…
Thanks,
Chris

The pattern fill will _always_ be a new layer. It can’t work on the existing layer.

The only thing it can do is use your current selection as a layer mask….
