Hello,

My monitor just flickered for the last time. I need to replace it, but the company budget can’t afford too much right now. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good (but economical) monitor?

Thanks for any advice!

Jonathan

There have been several threads on monitors and other hardware. Read through the forum while you’re waiting for some new suggestions.

But you should really define your budget. One person’s cheap is another’s expensive.

Thanks Bob, I’ll take a look around.

In terms of pricing, I’m rather out of touch with this kind of thing, so please don’t laugh if this is ridiculous, but could I pick up anything respectably decent for say $300? Or maybe $500 at the most?

You’d have to go CRT. Big difference between 300 and 500.

How big a screen were you looking to get?

I figured CRT would be the best choice for a good monitor with our budget. For size, I’ve been working on a 17", which is sufficient (though I wouldn’t mind going to 19"!)

Here’s a follow up question. As I mentioned before, I don’t know much about monitors. I’ve been looking around on Pricewatch, and found a listing for a Mitsubishi. I pasted the details from the Pricewatch listing below. The cost is $359. Does anyone think it’s a good value, or have any experience with this specific monitor?

Jonathan, I’ve been using a 22" Mitsubishi 2020u for the last 4 or 5 years. It’s an excellent monitor. Be advised, though, that those listings are for used monitors. No telling how old they are.

Hmmm . . . I didn’t realize it would be used. Maybe I could email the vendor and find out how old it is.

If anyone has more suggestions, I’d love to hear them. I’ve been doing some looking around here in other threads, but haven’t seen many references to more economically priced monitors.

Jonathan,

Take a look at Iiyama range too: http://www.iiyama.com

Thanks for the suggestions and input everybody. I decided to go with a Mitsubishi 940u, 19" monitor. Got it from a company called azatek.com for $125. My company would have let me get the more expensive Mitsubishi 2040u 22", but I decided to go with the cheaper one and buy an extra 512MB of RAM instead. <g>

Again, thanks for the input.

FYI for future lookers..

don’t go LCD.. from posting this in a photoshop forum, i’m going to guess you’re doing graphics or photography work and – except for MAYBE Cinemas, which arethousands of dollars, i wouldn’t trust LCD displays for perfect color and black ranges. any CRT monitor you find will pretty much give you good color and black qualities.. the differences are in their max resolutions and the refresh rates at those resolutions, and how bright the monitor is.

trinitrons will get my vote for best monitors – very bright, amazing color, best refresh rates. but they are amoung the more expensive screens. Viewsonics i’m told are bright monitors, KDS is good for color but the standard issue KDS doesn’t have a high 32bit resolution or a decent refresh rate.

..i have 17" and 19" flat screen Envisions at home.. i got them for 100$ and 200$ respectively at compusa, but their prices may have doubled. still dirt cheap – they are suprisingly bright with great color. however the 19" is flaky at 1600×1200 resolution. i had to really play with it to get it stable.
