text on transparent buttons issue

Hi all,

I’m having a weird problem with Photoshop CS lately. I’m trying to make some graphic buttons with text for a website. I want the text to be white on a transparent background. I’ve put a layer underneath the text layer that is all black, so the text will antialias onto a neutral colour. I put the text in, and it antialiases great. The problem? When I remove the underlying black layer and rasterize the text layer, the rasterized text layer bops into 2 color mode (1 white, 1 transparent indexed color), thus, no nice antialiased text, just nasty-looking 1 color text. I’m just doing this so that if we change the background colour the buttons are on, noone will have to recreate the nav buttons in the future. (I’m trying to make the site as easy to manage for future employees as possible.)

I’m clearly doing something _really_ stupid here, I can just feel it, but for the life of me, I can’t figure out what it is.

If it makes any difference, I’m saving into 8-big PNGs (which I later optimize with pngout (love that program – why can’t Photoshop correctly optimize PNGs?!)), but this problem is happening before I even get around to saving the files, so it’s not a file format issue.

thanks!
