good advise except the last

Make sure you have nothing selected, ctrl-d, and that you are on the

correct

layer.

copy won’t work unless *something* is selected!( and you are on the layer with something on it).

either you are trying to copy something from a layer not selected,
or you have a selection marquee active and are trying to copy something outside the boundaries of that selection.

Make sure you have nothing selected, ctrl-d, and that you are on the

Yes, you are correct, I worded that badly. I meant for him to press ctrl-d to deselect anything that may be selected he didn’t notice. Then of course select the area he wants to copy.
