Suggestions on making a "swooping" arrow

I need to draw "swooping" arrows where the "stem" of the arrow starts narrow and widens as it approaches the arrowhead. This will give a three dimensional look to the arrow. (The arrows are used in illustrations that explain how to tie knots…)
