Photoshop User’s,

I want to share this find…

I was having an annoying problem in Photoshop; whenever I tried to save a file , regardless of type, Photoshop always saved the file with a .psd extension.
Even if I specify the extension as .jpg, it would actually Save_As "filename.jpg.psd".

Go to the plug-in folder and add a tilde (~) in front of the Genuine Fractals plug-in file name to temporarily disable it.

That means you think you’re saving a JPEG but you’re actually saving a PSD. Look in the File Type popup menu in the Save dialog; what does it say?

Yes KatWoman, if I blank out the extension in the file name, it still Saves_As a .psd file type (filename.psd). Or, if I didn’t blank out the extension within the file name field, I get filename.jpg.psd or filename.tif.psd, etc. And tacit, no matter what file type was selected via the pull down extension selector, the saved image always ended with .psd – always! What a hassle having to, every time, rename Photoshop files to something else using IrfanView (awesome photo viewer). It took me a long while to find the problem/solution in a forum, so I came here to post this so maybe others won’t trip-out for as long as I did. I thought the problem was with file associations and maybe color management; I never would have suspected a plug-in would cause Photoshop to save all files as psd only. The solution below does fix the problem, and everything is back to normal. Whenever I plan to use Genuine Fractals (GF) to increase the size of a photo, which it does remarkably well, I first remove the tilde~ before the GF plug-in file name. Now the only problem is that my hard drive clean-up tool lists ~GF for deletion. Maybe there’s a better way of disabling and restoring GF…

I emailed the makers of GF about the compatibility issue, but haven’t yet received a reply. Win 98SE / Photoshop 7.04
