changing color on a scanned image

I have photoshop 7.0 and windows xp.

My problem is that whenever I scan a piece of fabric and want to change the color of it, I usually get the wrong shade or tone. I have scanned a grey fabric and I want to change it to a peach color. I have selected a peach color from the swatches window. When I paint the fabric with my brush under color mode, the peach turns into a neon orange. How can I get the right color?

I would suggest you add an Adjustment Layer (Solid Color, Hue/Saturation, Selective Color, etc.) over top of your scanned image, and work on changing the color non-destructively.

You can futz around with the color to your heart’s content with Adjustment Layers without ever touching the pixels in the original scan.
