I’m using CS2 on a PC and cannot unlock a gif background layer. I tried converting it to a PSD file, still no luck.
This is a client’s logo that I have to incorporate into an ad I’m creating. Can anyone help?

You are right Volvod. I have no right having any clients. I should refer them all to you so you can be as crude, rude and as nasty as you like. Please send me your name, address and phone number and I’ll send you my client.
I suppose newsgroups are not for people who are learning and contributing to help others but for people like you who wish to berate and make others feel stupid and worthless.
Get a job.

Thank you Walterius and edjh. It is people like you that make the world a better place to live in.
Very grateful.

Yes, that is correct.

A GIF is indexed color. You can not work in layers in indexed color. You must use Image->Mode->RGB in order to work in layers.

I haven’t heard one sensible answer here.. If it’s a GIF file, you want to edit it either in Imageready, or some other GIF file editor. And pick the layer you want to edit once you can see all the layers/frames.

Photoshop only edits gif’s with single layers. Unless they added something for gif animations with this last release that I’m unaware of. With GIF’s it’s called frames, not layers.

I don’t think you understood the question. There is no indication that this is an animated gif. Hew doesn’t want to edit a layer, he wants to add the image to another file. My original answer was perfectly fine.

GIF background layer. Tells me he’s looking at something he’s calling layers. The only layers are frames, and you can have a background frame that appears in all frames. ie: something like a fade in effect.
House, house with people in front, people walk in door, disappear, back to frame house.

And gif’s have frames vs layers. Meaning as he said he’s new to this. So calling a frame a layer is an understandable mistake if you’ve loaded it up in PS as that’s what they’re called in PS regardless of image format.

Though I have no idea why anyone even uses gif except for the animations now a days is beyond me. The quality sux, the size sux. Everything about gif sux except animation mode.

As for unlocking the layer, as you said image->mode->rgb, and smack the word background with the mouse or [better yet copy it to a new layer ] and change it to layer 0. Assuming single frame GIF file.

If the image isn’t moving, transparency serves no purpose. It could just be a simple cutout in front of the background.
And we’re back to animation GIF’s..

Glad that you got the answer that you needed, and inspired such discussion. Some things that you might want to think about in the future:

1.) List one’s OS and ver of PS, plus a short list of hardware might be worth while in helping someone solve your problem – in the case of your question, hdware isn’t an issue

2.) As complete a description of the file format (as many GIF images are animated, but it does not appear that yours was), and exact operations are greatly appreciated.

3.) An X-post to comp.graphics.apps.photoshop is a good idea, as both NG’s cover PS. By X-posting to both, all comments from either NG show up in the same thread. Part of all of this is to answer your question, but there will always be others, who come along later with the same, or similar question, and the ability to search both PS NGs in Google.Groups, or similar, is a positive.

4.) Make sure that the Subject Line Header covers the problem – I think yours did a good job of that.

BTW, how has your popularity been since the movie, "Sideways" came out? <G>

You are confusing two different, unrelated things. A frame and a layer are not the same thing.

You can’t work in layers in a GIF in any program–Photoshop or ImageReady. In ImageReady, you can add frames to a GIF, but you cannot add layers.

I think you need to read a lot more of what I said. All you did was repeat what I’ve already said.

No confusion at all.

If you load a gif into PS, it’s identified as a LAYER in the layers window. Same with any other format image you can load into PS. They’re all ID ‘d as LAYERS in the layers window.
