I realize that regular OCR’s like Textbridge and OmniPage have so-called "exact format" settings that are supposed to pick up the font (or pick one from those installed to "match"), but I’m talking about a quick applet that can be used when working with graphics to determine the font face EVEN IF IT’S NOT ACTIVELY INSTALLED. Preferably, such an app would give you the exact font and the font "family" with a list of more common fonts that would be similar. Also, preferably it would work as an applet that runs in the background and can be used to OCR a highlighted section of a bitmap or vector graphic from anywhere in Windows without opening the graphic in the program itself. This applet need not even actually carry out the full OCR function, just provide a font name/list.
Thank you for any info!!

Some good programmer could make a pretty penny on this idea! Even if it exists in some form or fashion, it’s certainly not popular or readily available, and (as every graphic artist knows) it’s a time-consuming pain in the ass searching through thousands of fonts trying to match one up. Hey, sell it to Adobe so we can all use it in the next version, or make a plug-in! There are so few good TEXT plugins.

it’s a good idea and it has been done
there is a website you can submit the font image as a graphic and it tell you what the name of the font is
I did not save the name of it but Ive seen it mentioned in this NG http://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/
