Hi,

I will describe my situation first, and ask my questions during the description.

I am a newbie at PSE 3.0, though I am getting better.

I have a photo of a woman sitting near the ledge of ruin (old building). Where she is sitting is much darker than the courtyard behind her. The photo is not very good because the woman is too dark, and the courtyard is too light.

To try to fix the picture, here is what I did:

1) Created a selection of the woman

2) Cut the selection and pasted it on its own layer (Layer 1)

3) Added an adjustment layer, Merged Down, and then made brightness and contrast adjustments to the woman
(Step three could have been alternatively done with Enhance | Adjust Lighting | Brightness & Contrast. I wanted the extra practice with layers)

4) On Layer 1, I also did Enhance | Adjust Color | Hue & Saturation

At this point, the woman is sort of taken care of. Her photo still needs work, but it is better.

To make the coutyard darker, I did the following:

5) Created two additional copies of the Background Layer (the woman selection is cut out), and turned on all three "courtyard" layers.

In looking at the photo, the courtyard seems a bit too vibrant, and the woman is a bit washed out. But the photo is better than I began with.

Questions:

1) Is there a better process or technique to solve my challenge?

2) Are there any key strokes that automatically cut and place the selection on its own layer?

I look forward to your thoughts.

Yes. Learn to use the Curves command.

The Brightness/Contrast and Color Balance commands are destructive. They degrade the quality of your image by removing hilight and/or shadow detail. Don’t use them.

Learn Curves. Curves can do everything that Brightness/Contrast and Color Balance can do, plus a whole lot more besides–and Curves won’t degrade your image by clipping hilight and shadow detail.

2) Are there any key strokes that automatically cut and place the selection on its own layer?

Make a selection and use Control-J (Mac: Command-J) to create a layer from the selection.

Unfortunately, PSE 3.0 doesn’t have the curves command, only Photoshop has it. So I don’t have that option.

Make a selection and use Control-J (Mac: Command-J) to create a layer from the selection.

Thanks
