Photoshop CS2 just wants to apply the filter to the whole image? I know I am doing something wrong, but unsure what.

Thanks in advance

Well, how are oyu making the selection, and what happens when you run the filter? Do you get an error message? If so, what does the message say?

What I am trying to do is bevel a selection for a border using the Bevel and Emboss option in the layer style dialog box.

It seems that this is only for applications pertaining to the entire layer. Is there a way to create bevel within a selection?

Layer styles apply to an entire layer. To apply a layer style to a selection, make your selection, create a new layer via copy from the Layer menu, and then apply the style to that new layer.

Ctrl-J with the selection active and it goes to another layer. Then you can apply the Style.

Layer Styles and Filters are two different things. Filters CAN be applied to selections.

you have to make a selection first
it will do the entire layer unless you do that first
if you are trying to bevel just the type use the little f (effects) at the layer palette, make sure the type or shape you select is on a different layer than the background or surrounding area
