Are there any options for controlling the shape ot the window used for each tile under Arrange > Tile?

As just one example. if I tile 12 images, I get 3 rows and 4 columns. What if I want 4 rows and 3 columns?

No, there are no options.

Thank you, Chris. that’s what I needed to know.

Question 2: The zoom used differs for each image but, in general, is not enough to eliminate scroll bars. 2/3, 1/2, and 1/4 seem to be commonly used but the rationale in choosing a zoom is not obvious. What is that rationale?

Question 3: When the window is larger than the image. PSCS adds additional blank space to fill out the window and fills that space with a color, but not always the same color. in my limited exploration, I’ve gotten deep blue and maybe a three-quarter gray. What determines the color used in this blank border space?

Huh? The border outside the image itself is always the same for all images – and it defaults to gray but you can change it by shift clicking with the paintbucket.

Chris,

Sorry, you are right! It is the browser border in which I find two different colors (gray and dark blue). That’s another topic but, since I have your attention, why the difference there?

And what about Question 2 re the choice of zoom within a window tile?

To answer my own question (#2):

PSCS tiling preserves whatever zoom exists in each individual image before invoking the Tile command. The zoom levels can all be different.

The zoomed images are viewed in windows of equal size for all images. That one window size (and therefore the aspect ratio) is fixed by dividing the whole screen into rows of equal height and columns of equal width such that the number of rows is the same as the number of columns or is one greater.

The number of rows and columns will be equal when the number of images is a perfect square (4,9,16…). Else, there will be one more row than column and some windows will be missing in the last row.

The zoom can be manually changed independently in each tile. When you zoom out enough, the scroll bars will disappear for that window and the window will shrink by the thickness of the scroll bar.

When you turn rulers off and on in individual tiles, the window dimensions are not changed. The real estate occupied by the ruler is used to show more of the image when the ruler is off.
