Yellow ‘halo’ appears when using P/S erase tool

There is a well-known video driver problem that can cause white to turn yellow in Photoshop.

But wouldn’t this turn all the white parts of an image yellow? Why would it just affect the ‘faded’ areas?

By any chance, are you erasing on the background layer with your background colour set to the offending yellow?

No, that’s what I originally thought was happening. But I checked this and there’s definitely no yellow – either in the foreground or background colours.

I’m pretty sure I know what you mean – I’ve struck something similar using the colour replacement tool. I’m the first to admit that I’m the world’s worst PS user – but having said that it seems to me that sometimes PS just seems to "plain and simply" get some things wrong from time to time.

Have you tried copying the layer to a new layer – switching off all other layers, and trying again with an eraser set to 100% hardness, and backgraound and foreground colours set to defaults?
