i dont understand the need to dgn now.

1- i guess for a lot of time the files from good manufacturers will remain for very long.

2 – if not, if there is a day that the software cant read a raw file, then is the moment to dgn the file and it is fixed.

so there is the cuestion, wy to dgn now??

There are probably 3 advantages for photographers to using DNG, and 1 main inhibiter:

Advantages:

1. Holding ACR 3.x settings in the DNG. (Also, DXO can output DNG to be input to ACR if someone wants to use both products).

2. Smaller file sizes. (Except for Sigma/Foveon users).

3. More credible archival format. (But this is more significant for "minority" raw formats, and probably less important for Canon & Nikon. In Pentax forums, the attitude to DNG is totally different from that in Nikon and Canon forums!)

Inhibiter:

1. Some software doesn’t accept DNG, so anyone using such products needs to retain their original raws, as well as or instead of DNGs. They can embed the original in the DNGs for later extraction, but that makes the file larger, of course.

There are advantages to camera manufacturers in adopting DNG. They will get 3rd party support for new cameras faster, and they will have control of the colour calibration because it is in the DNG file.

There are advantages to 3rd-party software developers in supporting DNG. Their products can then be used by photographers who have switched to a DNG-based workflow. (Like many others, my camera’s raws never get onto the PC. I convert to DNG from the card).

There are advantages for the future health of digital photography in DNG becoming a de facto standard raw format. Lack of general support of a common raw format is stifling innovation, and photographers and users of photographs are paying the price.
