However I set the preferences, it always reverts to CM on next load. I prefer to to work in inches.

I get a warning when I switch on that my Flatron LG screen is not configured. I cancel it. It comes back everytime. From what I can see on my screen everything seems OK.

Finally I have a photograph I print which present on the screen perfectly. When I print it always comes out much darker. I push it in photoshop as much as I can but still it is darker than I would wish.

I appreciate these are basic questions, but we all start somewhere and appreciate help.

Close all open Photoshop images so that Photoshop is sitting there with nothing open. Then change the preferences.

From then on, your units will be in inches. Photoshop files you saved before that point may still have a different unit saved.

Calibrate the monitor.

Read the chapter on "color management" in the Photoshop manual or in the online help.

I am newbie also, I dont’ know why it is reverting to cm’s when you choose inches in your preferences….
But it sounds like you might need to calibrate your printer with your monitor to solve your dark printing problem. Another thing to think about is how much brightness do you have your monitor set to? Do a search in this group for color calibrations…Most everything looks good on a screen, it is lit up!! lol
