I have a problem with installing Photoshop 7.0 on an XP-machine. I used to run Windows 98SE on the same machine and I never had any problems with Photoshop. Recently I did a clean install of Windows XP and installed Photoshop 7.0. When I start up Photoshop after the installation is complete, everything works fine. But when I reboot the computer and the desktop-icons are loading up, suddenly the screen turns black & white. I remove Photoshop, reboot the computer and everything is back to normal.

Suggestion anyone on what the problem could be?

Run Adobe Gamma after reinstalling Photoshop.

If that doesn’t fix it, turn hardware acceleration down to zero. If that fixes it turn it back up and get yourself an updated video driver from the manufacturers website.

You should do this anyway if you used the native Windows video driver.

…and let you know how it works out

We’ll appreciate that, Mattie. We get less feedback in a lifetime than Jimi Hendrix made on one gig.

I’m sorry if this is a simple question but I’m basically from the school of "If it ain’t broke don’t fix it". If my screen colors look fine is there a reason I would want to do this anyway (Control Panel / Adobe Gamma) or only if the problem descibed happens. Thanks.

Gordon,

If my screen colors look fine is there a reason I would want to do this
anyway <<

Every reason. If Photoshop doesn’t know your monitor’s characteristics, its Colour Management System can’t work properly.

I tried out Adobe Gamma as you suggested but once I get to the “Phosphor Settings” and I select “Trinitron” as suggested in several manuals I found online, the screen changes to black and white again.

I’m about to give up and go back to Windows SE. The only other thing I can think of are the drivers for the monitor?
