1. Not necessary being able to read Dutch.
The photo says enough.
If the developer finds it to expensive to remove
the telephone pole, it will be left where it is.
The communication people’s defended them with ‘the pole was there first!’

2. I’m no racist. Provocation for it is the
bunch of letters about niggers that
was posted here.
Normally I do not read their letters,
but I did open one, and had a laugh.
Then I read more in the same thread.
Nothing could stop me posting this in response.

To be (overly) correct: the article is not written in Dutch but in Afrikaans.

Road crews and other workmen do all kinds of silly stuff, who knows why. I had a friend who was on a construction crew, doing the spackling after the electricians had put in the outlet boxes. On one particular day, the electricians left more holes and cracks in the drywall than usual, so to teach them a lesson, the plasterers spackled in the outlet boxes.

The next day, the electricians came back wondered if they’d really done the job or not. It didn’t take them long to figure out what happened, and the job they did re-installing the boxes left the plaster in a somewhat – shall we say – even poorer state than before. And the cycle started over again.

Maybe something like that happened between the utility crew and the road crew. Or the workmen did it as a joke on everyone concerned to get a picture in the paper.

Besides, new countries and governments always open themselves to new criticisms. When Toynbee visited frontier America, he cited Davy Crockett, who was, indeed, a homeless illiterate man, as an example of how Democracy might be in grave danger.

The developer simply said ‘Telkom’ our local telephone service, priced the removal of the the telephone pole to high, and he would not pay it. The news report was about an aggreement between them with Telkom lowering the cost with the purpose of removing it.

giggle about the funny words and funny grammer. Have you got a cooking clue what you are talking about? After giving me some examples, think of how we laugh when the Dutch call a cat a poes, and this even in decent company.

DD, I don’t question your intentions, but I think the word "nigger" is so offensive, particularly when used in a light hearted way, that you should apologize, and we should all move on.
