This may be a stupid question, but couldn’t you just batch rename the files using a third party utility (or I think XP can do it for you too)

I guess I could but I don’t want to mess with the integrity of the file. I am not sure if it would have any negative effect doing it that way.
I guess I wanted a way to automate the whole process – to convert the psd files to photoshop pdf with the pdp extension automatically without having to involve my self in manual intervention.

So make copies of the files in a different directory.
As I said, there are ways to automate the renaming. You just want to make sure simply renaming the file does the job.
this might help. right click one of the files, go to PROPERTIES, and change "OPENS WITH" to Adobe Photoshop. Now all PDFs will open in Photoshop, not Acrobat.

I don’t think this is what Stephen wants, that’s whay the PDP extension exists. Why would anyone want PDFs to open in anything but Acrobat by default? How would that affect PDF links in web pages?

I think the above translates as, "No."
Start>Run CMD
Navigate to the folder where the files are
cd\x:\folder name [ENTER] where x is the drive letter and folder name is the folder name
and type ren *.pdf *.pdp.
