Howdy Gang,
I’ve seen a few postings about ATI issues with the latest (and virtually EVERY) drivers for that brand of card. I ran into performance issues and some bugs when I was flight simming big time. When I was simming, I learned of a site that had tweaked the ATI drivers (or made their own version – whichever) which resulted in drastically fewer bugs and much improved performance. So, I gave them a try, and lo and behold, they really were a tonne better than the manufacturer’s version! However, since I quit simming, the other night I decided to switch back to the "official" ATI 4.6 Catalyst drivers. You may have noticed that last night I posted 2 questions here, wondering if the file browser in PS CS was really as buggy as I was seeing. No one else noticed the problems I remarked about on their machines, so I figured it was just a "bad night". Well, tonight I noticed when I was applying sharpening and saturation effects on some of my images, as soon as I clicked "OK", some of the effect (about 50%) would be instantly lost. This was a completely repeatable situation. After some contemplation, I decided to roll my driver back to the Omega version I had replaced the other night, and then went right back into PS CS and repeated my exercises. Voila! No problems whatsoever! All the adjustments stuck and everything looked great. The Gamma works fine as well (I think the version of Omegas I have equates roughly to the Cat 4.1 or 4.4 drivers). On top of that, my browsing and work with the browser and images open at the same time has seen a doubling of the speed at which the screen refreshes.
Now, the Omega’s are not signed by MS as far as I know, and of course ATI does not support them (that may be a GOOD thing here!), but if you want to give them a try, they are located at: <http://www.omegadrivers.net/> . The decision is yours of course, but I’ve had flawless usage with these drivers, and if I ever switch out of Omega’s again, it will be to change over to an NVidia card. ATI had a bad reputation for bugs several years ago and I dropped them then and went with NVidia, but someone had told me that ATI had rectified their problems of old and were now a good bet. I beg to disagree.
I hope this is of some help to folks out there. Good luck.
Glenn
