There are still ways to account for folks who don’t have Flash, and part of being an effective designer is accomodating such things, like the rather large number of people who have the same limitation Dan does on his browser. Like it or not, Flash is past it’s "cool factor" phase, and many folks don’t choose to view it. If that’s a segment of your audience you don’t mind blindfolding, feel free (or hell… send ’em to my site). 😉

Just something to consider…

the odd thing is that it is only the links that are in flash…. and they could be almost replicated with a bit of javascript.

Thing is 93% or maybe more have the flash reader embedded in their browser. it’s a small minority who don’t. I don’t object to people using flash for buttons and small animations. That’s where it’s useful However, the problems occur when they write the whole site in Flash, or even just the front page. Ever tried bookmarking a Flash front page? Yes, I know you can go Favourites/Add but I would contend that Most general browsers (as in people) are used to right clicking and selecting Add to…

It’s inappropriate use of Flash that’s the problem. When ever I build a Flash-enabled site, Flash is only used for details, like buttons. And I started giving people pure HTML and/or Javascript links as an alternative long ago. It doesn’t take much extra effort to do that if you use templates, and it keeps everybody happy. 😉

I’d probably agree with that, but why I see that as so is probably different than your view. I think it is because of the power and ease with which it allows people to create and enhance web sites with multimedia.

That’s way overstated. My guess is that you can’t support that statement with any published facts or stats. Please, show me if you can.

If websites were actually being enhanced with Flash, Flash would not be the pariah it is.

Yes, yes, Flash is popular among adolescent geeks who are still stuck in dot-com nirvana. There are those who still think the <blink> tag is cool, too. I say "dead technologies," every consumer-driven survey agrees and *you* point out the exceptions.

You’re not going to suck me into "prove it" either, not with you. You were the one emphatically stating that all was well with the telecom companies/broadband within weeks of those companies recording the largest bankruptcies in U.S. history.

I know I know!!! You can spin that; everything is A-Okay, best thing that could have happened.

Go tell it to the Marines.

Anyone who thinks, at this late date, that Flash has any major future on the web is living in a complete fantasy world or — more likely — mom’s basement.

Rolling Stone
Disney
ESPN
Absolut Vodka
Porsche
Mini Cooper
or:
Nike

?

I don’t think I’ve _EVER_ had any reason to visit them. Sometimes, I think companies make websites just because they can. Admittedly, I don’t drink, I despise Disney, and I’ll never have enough money to waste it on cars like those. And I hate sports. :^)

Maybe I’m not the typical demographic?

If, as seems apparent, your reason for using Flash is its ability to link to databases and other files then you have discovered the wrong technology. You should be using ASP or PHP if that’s what you’re after, at least that’s what the real dynamic db driven websites use, not Flash bloatware.

I honestly had NO IDEA Flash had "database support."

I’d be just as surprise if someone said my car can fold laundry. It’s just not two things I’d have put together!

I guess I’m not a very ‘l33t’ web developer, since I didn’t know that fact. 😉

All Flash does is pass variables to a PHP, ASP or other server side script that does the database query and then passes the query result back to Flash in a URL encoded form. Flash then is used to facilitate display of the data.
