I seem to be unable to access the Photoshop Help option from the Help option when I click on it. I don’t know what the problem is? Can anyone give me an answer to this problem and guide me through the process of correcting it?

Another possibility – I had this problem when I had both PS and PS Elements installed. Removing Elements solved it.

Dear LenHewitt,

Thank you for the information, but my problem is not solved. I should have stated which version of Adobe Photoshop I was using. I am using Windows XP. I do not have any of the trial programs you listed running on my system. I have McAfee VirusScan Online running all the time to protect my system from viruses. The only time I disable to anti-virus program is when following the installation instructions of certain programs. Upon completing the installation process of these programs, I re-boot my system so the anti-virus program is enabled again. I have Photoshop CS, version 8.0. When I first installed the software and began learning how to use Photoshop, I had no problem when I click on the Help Menu Option and then click on "Photoshop help." The help window always opened and I could look for information on how to clarify the mistake I made in trying to do something in Photoshop. I downloaded from tutorials from PhotoShopusers.com to help me better understand how to use Photoshop. Since doing that, I can’t access the "Photoshop Help" when I click on this option under Help. Now that you have this information, can you tell me what happened and how to access the Photoshop Help?

Len,

the document at the link you gave doesn’t refer to a higher version of Photoshop than 6.0 although it (the document)was recently updated.

I recently got this symptom in PS CS (no Help from within PS) and worked out for myself to open PS Help in the browser. But why should this be necessary?

Agreed, you shouldn’t have to do this, but there is a fairly simple workaround if you can’t find the real solution.

1. Navigate to the folder where Photoshop is installed
2. Open the ‘Help’ folder
3. scroll down to ‘help.html’
4. Right-click and drag ‘help.html’ to your desktop
5. Select ‘Create a Shortcut Here’ from the pop-up menu
6. Close the Photoshop folder(s)
7. Right-click on the ‘help.html’ shortcut icon on your desktop
8. Select ‘Properties’ from the pop-up menu
9. Click on the ‘Shortcut’ tab if it is not open
10. Put your cursor in the ‘Shortcut key:’ edit box
11. Hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys and press a letter key (example: Ctrl-Alt-H)
12 The edit box should show the keys you pressed
13. Click ‘Apply’ and ‘Close’

Now you can access Photoshop Help at any time by pressing Ctrl-Alt-H (or whatever). Hope this helps.

Joan,

Suggest you use Solution1 in the tech support doc.

You may also wish to check the following registry entry:

Solution 5: Edit the value of the AdobeHome key. (Windows only) Use the Windows Registry Editor to make a backup copy of the Windows registry and to edit the value of the AdobeHome key:

Disclaimer: The registry contains system-related information that is critical to the computer and applications. Adobe does not provide support for problems that arise from improperly modifying the registry. Adobe recommends you have experience editing system files before you modify the registry. Make sure that you make a backup copy of the registry before modifying it. For information on the Windows Registry Editor, refer to the Windows online Help, or contact Microsoft.

1. Exit from all applications.
2. Choose Start > Run.
3. Type regedit in the Open text box, and click OK.
4. In the Registry Editor, choose Registry > Export Registry File.
5. In the Export Registry File dialog box, choose a location and a name for
the backup file, and then click Save.
6. Select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Adobe\Common Files folder in the left side of the Registry Editor window.
7. In the right side of the Registry Editor window, double-click the AdobeHome key.
8. In the Edit String dialog box, change the Value Data to X:, where "x" designates the startup drive.

Note: The startup drive is the hard disk where Windows is installed. Make sure that you specify the correct drive (for example, C).

9. Choose Registry > Exit.

John,

the document at the link you gave doesn’t refer to a higher version of
Photoshop than 6.0 <<

That doesn’t mean the same ‘fixes don’t apply 😉

But why should this be necessary?<<

I’m sure if the engineers knew that it wouldn’t happen!

Many moons ago, when I first installed PS7, I had the problem, Then I installed a newer release of Mozilla as default browser and PS Help (and ONLY PS Help) started opening in IE! A later update to Mozilla finally got the things opening in the default (Mozilla) Browser. None of that makes any logical sense to me…
