Hi:

What quality level should I use when saving jpeg in Photoshop. 12 is the max but yields %MB files. Level 10 files are about 2.5 MB in size. Also if I resave a level 12 files as level 10 will there be a large quality loss? These pictures will be sold through the web and printed by Ezprints lab.

Once a jpeg has been saved at a lower quality level, you can never make it better. Saving it again at a higher quality level will force the jpeg compression to be recomputed and may result in further degradation. Whether or not it’s visible in an output is dependent on both the nature of the image and that of the output. I have certainly seen unacceptable jpeg artifacts on subtle gradations even at the highest quality setting.

IOW, you’re better off saving in another format, if possible, like tif, for example, that also does compression, but in a non-degredatory way.

Hi:
The on-line service only supports jpeg. Do you have a feeling in general for the quality difference between quality level 12 and 10. The files I have modified in photoshop and saved at quality level 12 are much bigger than the original jpeg, e.g. 2.5 MB original and 5+MB at quality level 12. If I save them at level 10 they are about the same size as the original.

I think if you’re going to be selling the images, it’s in your best interest to supply an image that’s not degraded. any save as jpg will cause data loss, but if you HAVE to save as jpg, it’s my opinion you should save with the least loss possible, that is in PS, at setting 12. YMMV.

another thought is do they take jpeg 2000 formatted images? they do lossless compression…

Unlikely that anyone would take JPG2K images, as there are next to no apps that support them.

There are arguments to be made against the selling of JPG images, as – in theory – they are likely to be lower-quality than, say, drum-scans of 4×5 transparencies saved as TIF. But in reality, there are some commercially available TIF files that look worse than high-quality JPGs.

Caveat emptor.
