Help needed on working with ICC profile.

I want to print some images shot with a digital camera. The print service bureau uses a Fuji Frontier and I downloaded the ICC profile for this machine.
I installed this profile and created a Color Setting according to Fuji’s specifications.

I need some advice on how to proceed.

The images were shot with a Canon Powershot G1, and I used Adobe’s Camera Raw plug-in to get the files in Photoshop.
In the Camera Raw plug-in I set the color space to sRGB IEC61966-2.1. This matches the Color Setting I created for the Fuji Frontier.

My questions now are:
1. Once the image is in Photoshop and I want to do some color adjustments or adjustments in general, must I first convert the profile to the Fuji Frontier profile and then make the color adjustments or must I first do the color adjustments and then convert the profile?

2. And when making/viewing these color adjustments must I turn ‘Proof colors’ on?
When I turn ‘Proof colors’ on (the proof setup is set to the Fuji Frontier) there is a small color shift. I thought that once a profile is converted, the image will show on my monitor as it will be printed (once monitor is calibrated of course).

Any additional tips or advice?

Thanks in advance.

Herman

Although the differences may be little, it’s best to convert first and edit next. If you first edit the image, and then convert it to the Frontier profile, you may find you have to edit it again to get exactly the colors you want in the print.

No, because you have converted to file already.

Proof colors shows what the file will look after you have converted it.

But why do I get this small color shift (the image darkens) after I converted the color space and then turn Proof Colors on?

What is the Proof Setup? Is it the same as the color space your image has? In that case, there shouldn’t be a difference.

The Proof Setup is set to custom and refers to the Fuji Frontier profile. The same profile I convert the images to.

But why would you "proof" colors if the space is the same anyway?

As a newby to ICC profiles and soft proofing, I was just checking whether everything was matching.
My idea was, once I convert to the Frontier colorspace, there shouldn’t be a difference. But there is a small one

I found this interesting link giving a workflow for using profiles:

The document that I referred to, probably includes the answer to my problem (color shift when turning proof colors on).

http://www.drycreekphoto.com/Frontier/using_frontier_profile s.htm

Item 14 says that when you convert the colorspace, Photoshop turns off Paper White simulation.
After conversion, I was probably soft proofing with ‘Simulate Paper White’ turned on.

Thanks for your help.
