Hiya,

I need to find 2 photos to use in a logo I’m designing for a Nationwide non-profit organization.

Most stock photos for sale, state that they can’t be used in a logo … so where do I find such photos to use, and know that it’s safe to use legally?

By the way, one of the photos I’m not able to obtain, due to the subject matter.

Thank you,
Dee

Perhaps a -description- (text – this is not a binary group) of what you’re looking for might help someone lead you to a source?

An Eagle (head and shoulders shot) looking forward, but slightly to the left (your right)

A waving flag …. showing some blue and white stars .. and some red & white stripes

I don’t quite understand your concerns. If it’s a real logo (not a photo) like, for instance, this one:

http://images.google.com/images?q=huntsville+school+eagle+lo go

then it’s an entirely original piece of work. Nobody will be able to determine which photo you used as a starting point.

Hi Greg,

To make things clearer … here are a few examples of exactly what I’m looking for:

http://home.twcny.rr.com/kittykatz/room%202.htm

I want to take one of those photos … and incorporate it into a logo for the organization.

From what I’m reading, it’s either not permissable …. or it’s going to cost them ALLOT of money, and being non-profit, I’m not sure that’s possible.

Hope that clears things up a bit. 🙂

contact the stock agency and ask for a price
is the non profit paying you for the design work?
If so they have a budget for it.
A photographer may be willing to let you use his image if it’s a worthy cause.

I have to stop and question why you are doing this.

Look at the logos you see plastered all around you–Nike, Radio Shack, Microsoft, Wal-Mart, or any professionally-designed logo at all, really. They don’t contain photos.

There’s a reason for that.

Photos don’t belong in logos. For starters, logos need to be reproducible at any size, from postage stamp to billboard, and this is virtually impossible with a photo.

Also, logos need to be printed in a wide variety of different ways, on business cards and letterhead and packages and in brochures and magazines and everything in between, and you can’t always assume you can print halftones or print multiple colors…something you can’t do with a photo.

Many people confuse "illustrations" with "logos" and believe an illustration can be used as a logo. Most often, this is not the case; illustrations can be more complex than logos, but can not be reproduced as easily in as wide a variety of media, and don’t really serve the same function.

Logo design is one of the single most difficult areas of graphic design, precisely because an effective logo needs to communicate a unique identity but is so constrained in the way it can be designed. People who are unfamiliar with the realities of prepress and design often end up designing illustrations, rather than logos, because designing an illustration is so much easier to do, and they’re not really cognizant of the difference.

If your logo design requires photographic images, I urge you to reconsider your design.

Hi Tacitr,

Maybe I haven’t explained myself good enough … this particular organization (which my husband and I are both involved in) wants to have the look of another nationwide organization’s symbol, and the person who handles that area is all ready in touch with the 2’nd organization, negotiating things.

I’m just a member of this organization that was asked to see if I could come up with a symbol/logo look similiar to the one of the 2’nd organization IF they give us permission to use the look.

It’s similiar to Neighborhood Watch, if you’re familiar with that …. this is a ‘watch’ symbol, and is perfect for the organization that I may be designing for. It’s all somewhat integrated in a way, so that’s why they are negotiating rights to use their ‘symbol’. I can’t elaborate too much more now, since I’m unable to mention the organizations just yet.

I am familiar with logo design, I have created and sold them in the past, I’ve been going further into my own illustrations lately, but because I had did this in the past and had my own business, they asked if I would help.

Hope that explains it a bit more. If and when I can tell you the other organization and show you their ‘symbol/logo’, I’m sure you’d understand.

Hi Harry,

Even at those particular places, it’s stating that you can’t use some of the photos in a logo.

I have contacted a few by phone, and if I pay the right amount of money (200-350) and choose only Royalty Free, we can use it for anything we want and as many times as we want, it will be ours. I’m not sure at this time .. if the organization has a budget, or what it is … I’m waiting to hear on that.

Hey Voivod,

I wish I could .. but my camera just isn’t good enough for that, and living on SSI right now .. I’m unable to buy a new one. Besides, that darn bald eagle at our zoo, always perches WAY up in the top of the branches … just to make it hard on us to take shots. LOL …

Hi Kat,

Yes .. this is what I finally ended up doing .. as least for now. I was quoted a price from between $200-350. I’m waiting to hear back if they have a budget for this and what it is.

Yes, thought of trying to locate a photographer to do this … at our local zoo, or perhaps one who all ready had the photos … will pursue this more. 🙂

Thanks,
Dee
