eraser tool failed

The eraser tool stopped working. I am working around using other forms of selection and delete. I uninstalled and reinstalled but still did not fix.
I am using Photoshop CS with one gig of RAM and windows XP–dell computer thank you for your help

reset your prefrences per the faq, or remove your pen from the tablet.

I reset my preferences and the eraser tool still does not work when I am using the mouse– or when I am using the pen with the tablet..are you asking me to disconnect the wacom tablet?thanks, barb–
