Daughter wants Photoshop for Christmas. When I look for an internet store, the price range is $60 – $400.

Since I have no idea what I should buy, suggestions from knowledgeable Photoshop users is appreciated.

Her operating system:

Win2000 Professional
Sempron 2500+
PC2700 Memory

Thanks,

BG

All that link will get you is a downloadable copy which is not legal, can’t be upgraded or registered and would not qualify for any technical support. Photoshop is an expensive program. If your daughter is still in school, she can qualify for an academic version which is significantly cheaper and is the same as the full-priced version. You might be able to find someone selling a licensed version on Ebay but you’d have to make sure it is a legitimate version and that they are transferring the license to you.

There never has been an OEM release of Photoshop.

Not a good link. A link to a bootleg pirate site where you will get a copy that may or may not work.

The so-called "OEM" sites sell illegal pirated software. Most of the "OEM" sites are run out of Russia, by Russian organized crime–many of them by Leo Kuvayev of the Russian Spam Gang.

There is no such thing as an OEM copy of Photoshop. Adobe does not provide versions of Photoshop with any hardware bundles; only Photoshop Elements. Anybody who claims to provide "OEM" copies of Photoshop is lying.

The "stores" you are seeing are illegal pirate sites, some of which look incredibly "official" and most of which are operated from overseas by Russian organized crime.

You can not get a legal copy of Photoshop for $60.

You’ll probably be receiving spam from Art Schwartz soon, advertising "perfect-shareware.com" as the solution to your problems. Do a Google search on him before you consider giving him your credit card number; what you find will let you know what kind of person he is and what kind of "business" he runs.

Oh, but you can. Just purchase an older legal version of PS 5.0-7.0 for under $60. They are available all over the web and are sold on EBay as well. Then this will qualify for a PS CS2 upgrade version priced in at about $150 retail. At install of CS2 the older version disc has to be inserted into the CD-Rom for verification, installation of the older program isn’t necessary. Heck, my 7.0 was an upgrade and worked well for the CS2 upgrade. Sure beats the heck out of the full version pricing of $600-$800.

This is what I did .I was taking the course at NY Institute of Photography and called Adobe. They refered me to a local reseller who sold me the "education version" after I faxed him a copy of my student ID.

How does this installation process verify that your older version of PS is legal?

isn’t necessary. Heck, my 7.0 was an upgrade and worked well for the CS2 upgrade. Sure beats the heck out of the full version pricing of $600-$800.
