I use an epson 3170 scanner and scan 35mm negatives into photoshop CS using the import command. The problem started a couple of weeks ago and it’s getting worse (happening more often). Sometimes when I click to preview what has scanned, I will get a photoshop error that reads: "could not complete the import command because of a problem with the acquisition module interface". The only option is to click OK. I then have to exit out of photoshop and go to the help section on my computer and reinstall the NIC driver. This usually fixes the problem.

Any idea what could be causing this? I’m not doing anything with the network interface card, so why should that be bothering the program?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. — I looked for a "patch" for the problem and there isn’t one.

If this scanner is under warranty, arrange to send it back. I let Epson "technical support" lead me around by the nose trying to convince me the problem was with Windows. The scanner was defective. As soon as a new one arrived, the problem went away.

I use an Epson 3170, and would never have thought to scan directly into Photoshop. Try using their scan software stand-alone, make a TIF, and import that into Photoshop.

If you really have to do it the direct way, first check for spyware/viruses, then reinstall your scanner software, and try again.

If the scanner is scsi, check your scsi cable; try swapping out for a different one. Use as short a cable as is feasible; same for parallel.

I scan literally thousands of pages directly into photoshop (not CS though), so it *should* work flawlessly. I had trouble with Microtek’s ScanWizard Pro and too long of a scsi cable; when I started using the Epson GT10000 with their Twain Pro, all issues went away.

Also check for driver updates from the scanner mfr, and check their support bulletins for like issues.

Finally, if all else fails, use r_harvey’s suggestion; scan outside of photoshop and save as tiff prior to processing.

Peace,
Tony
