It is largely irrrelevant when viewing on the screen. Remember your screen has a pixel size of 1024 x 768 at about 72ppi, or 800 x 600 @ 72 ppi – -whatever resolution you have set it to.
The thing that really matters is the total pixel dimensions which give you the size of the photo. Total pixel width / ppi = width in inches.
ppi only matters when you are ready to print.
When you are ready to print your image, goto "image size" turn off "resample" and change the ppi to whatever suits your printer (usually between 150 and 300 ppi). This number is NOT the same as the quoted printer dots per inch.
