I’m trying to select some white pixels with the magic wand.

How does the tolerance work ? If make it higher is that supposed to select more pixels or less ?

If you select a tolerance of ‘one’ the magic wand will select precisely the colour you first touch.
The higher you set the tolerance the less precise the selection. Don’t forget you can add to your selection by holding down the shift key and clicking with the wand somewhere else! – hope that helps.

Thanks. It doesn’t seem all that precise. If I select 1 and touch white, it selects white and a couple other light colors too. How can I get it to only select the white ?

You might need to go into edit – preferences – displays and cursors – and select precise if you have not already done so! otherwise PS might pick up a selection of colours from the area you first touch.
Strangely enough, I just tried this myself and for some reason when I select Magic wand I can get in to the toolbar to alter the tolerance!! Hopefully this will sort it self out next time I load PS.

Changing the preference to Precise didn’t make any difference but turning off Anti aliasing did it. Thanks

you’ve got to set the eyedropper tool to point sample first.

Higher tolerance = greater difference in color = more pixels.
