Hi all, May I first wish you all a happy and healthy 2006. I have for the first time used my Nikon D70 Camera using the RAW file format.I imported the Pictures into Photoshop CS but when I open them they just open into the ordinary browser. According to the manual, the RAW file browser should "Automatically" open when openning Raw Files.
It doesn’t say what to do if this fails to happen. Would some kind person point me in the right direction. Many thanks in advance. Gill

Gill,

If you have not done so yet, go to Adobe.com and get the latest ARC (Adobe RAW Converter) and follow the installation instructions. If you have installed the Nikon software, especially Capture 4.x, you will need to replace the RAW plugin in two places. Once you have the ARC installed, it will "automatically" open your image in the ARC, from which you can do much of the processing. Once pleased, Save_As PSD and Open in PS CS. The Save_As part is just how I do it, as you can Open it directly in PS, THEN Save_As.

Photoshop CS probably doesn’t support the D70. You can download the DNG Converter from Adobe, convert the NEF files to DNG and open those in Photoshop CS.

Hi Hunt & Johan, I have followed your advice and downloaded the latest Raw converter and also the DNG converter. I have the DNG on my desk top but I still can’t get it to come together. When I down load the pic’s into P/S I have to choose what format and I select Photoshop Raw. I no longer have a NEF tag. If possible ,can you please tell me the sequence I should be going through loading the pictures from the D70 camera to openning in Photoshop?Very many thanks for your kind assistance. Gill

Hi.

I am assuming you have the D70, which is supported in Ps Cs, rather than D70s, which I believe is only supported in Ps Cs2..

First of all there is no need to download into Ps. You just drag or copy the NEF files from the Camera or Card onto your hard drive, and they will still be NEF files.

It is quite wise to keep these files as an archive, especially since they are only about 5 Mb each. Treat them like original Film Negs, no matter what you do later, you can always go back to them for a fresh copy file.

Open Ps and navigate the Browser to where your NEFs are stored. Double click on one, and you will get the Raw Converter, with its load of sliders, assuming you have downloaded and installed ACR 2.4.

If you get a converter with hardly any options, you still have the Nikon converter on your system. Go to My Computer > Program Files > Adobe > Photoshop CS > Plugins > File Formats and Remove both Nikon files to somewhere they can do no harm, like the Bin. Which is actually quite a good place to store most Nikon Sw.

All should work quite smoothly now.

You shouldn’t select Photoshop Raw, because that’s an entirely different format. In fact, you shouldn’t have to select anything, because Photoshop should recognise the DNG files without your assistance. Of course you do no longer have a NEF tag, the comverted image is no longer a NEF, it’s a DNG. Make sure you do NOT install the latest Camera RAW plugin, because that one doesn’t work with Photoshop CS, only with CS2.

The ACR ver that was out when CS hit did support D70, as I got both about the same time and all worked great (AFTER I did a replace for the Nikon Caputer RAW plug-in modules!). I think the D70s wasn’t included until fairly recent ver of ACR.

My workflow looks thusly: Copy (not Move) NEFs to folder on computer via card reader, where folder = Jobxxx>Originals>RAW. Files retain NEF extension. I then add folder DNG and convert a copy of the NEFs to DNG (primarily for use in the future, if NEF goes away, or is changed drastically). Backup all NEFs & DNGs to DVD, and to a removable HDD. Open NEF file(s) in ARC via Bridge and process to the level above Jobxxx>Originals, as PSDs. Once into PS, I do a Save_As PSD into another sub-folder, Jobxxx>Work, and use Save_As xxx(ver #,
i.e. _01) for possible reversion, should I, or client need to go back a step,
or two, or three. Once finished with color/density/compositing, etc., I Save_As Jobxxx>Finals, convert to 8-bit and Save_As Jobxxx>Finals>8-bit, then run Neat Image & Sharpen, with Save_As Jobxxx>Output. Often I will have several more sub-folders for RGB, CMYK, High-rez JPG (larger file size), Low- rez JPG (sized down, probably Save_For_Web, with higher JPG compression, etc ..). Some clients also need/get B/W versions, MAC & PC versions (usually TIFFs) and then the necessary Mode conversions, depending on the project.

While there are a lot of Save_As steps, I can usually pull up almost anything that the client could possibly want. It’s NOT foolproof, but it works. Finally, I’ll do a DVD (often DL by this time), a DAT-3 tape, and copy it all to a removable HDD. Lots of files, lots of versions, but has saved my bottom on more than one occassion. I’ll often also do several copies of the delivery DVD (always withOUT the PSDs, as client does not get those), just to have around for when a secretary sends the DVD out to a magazine, without ever making a copy for the office. One call to a messenger, and a new DVD is in their hands, before close of business.

I do not suggest that you need to do all of this. It is probably vast overkill for most, unless you have a ton of ad clients, with ADs, who often say things, like, "hey, I liked that version that we saw last week better than what we have now… "
