Hi Hunt & Johan, I have followed your advice and downloaded the latest Raw converter and also the DNG converter. I have the DNG on my desk top but I still can’t get it to come together. When I down load the pic’s into P/S I have to choose what format and I select Photoshop Raw. I no longer have a NEF tag. If possible ,can you please tell me the sequence I should be going through loading the pictures from the D70 camera to openning in Photoshop?Very many thanks for your kind assistance. Gill

My workflow looks thusly: Copy (not Move) NEFs to folder on computer via card reader, where folder = Jobxxx>Originals>RAW. Files retain NEF extension. I then add folder DNG and convert a copy of the NEFs to DNG (primarily for use in the future, if NEF goes away, or is changed drastically). Backup all NEFs & DNGs to DVD, and to a removable HDD. Open NEF file(s) in ARC via Bridge and process to the level above Jobxxx>Originals, as PSDs. Once into PS, I do a Save_As PSD into another sub-folder, Jobxxx>Work, and use Save_As xxx(ver #,
i.e. _01) for possible reversion, should I, or client need to go back a step,
or two, or three. Once finished with color/density/compositing, etc., I Save_As Jobxxx>Finals, convert to 8-bit and Save_As Jobxxx>Finals>8-bit, then run Neat Image & Sharpen, with Save_As Jobxxx>Output. Often I will have several more sub-folders for RGB, CMYK, High-rez JPG (larger file size), Low- rez JPG (sized down, probably Save_For_Web, with higher JPG compression, etc ..). Some clients also need/get B/W versions, MAC & PC versions (usually TIFFs) and then the necessary Mode conversions, depending on the project.
While there are a lot of Save_As steps, I can usually pull up almost anything that the client could possibly want. It’s NOT foolproof, but it works. Finally, I’ll do a DVD (often DL by this time), a DAT-3 tape, and copy it all to a removable HDD. Lots of files, lots of versions, but has saved my bottom on more than one occassion. I’ll often also do several copies of the delivery DVD (always withOUT the PSDs, as client does not get those), just to have around for when a secretary sends the DVD out to a magazine, without ever making a copy for the office. One call to a messenger, and a new DVD is in their hands, before close of business.
I do not suggest that you need to do all of this. It is probably vast overkill for most, unless you have a ton of ad clients, with ADs, who often say things, like, "hey, I liked that version that we saw last week better than what we have now… "
