Upgrading to CS on a NEW machine with no previous versions installed yet. Do I NEED to install 7.0 first? When it searches for a previous version, I don’t HAVE the 7.0 disc. It was a download. I just have the serial number. It is registered though.

I’m running Windows XP.

It was a download.

i’m just going to take a guess and say yes you’d need to install 7 first. but FIRST i’d try poining the previous version verification in the CS install at the downloaded file. Is it a zip that you can extract and point to that? If that doesn’t work you can just install 7 then CS, or you can call customer service and see if they have a workaround.

Does indeed sound like one of the rare cases where it might just be less hassle to install 7, then CS. They can coexist, too.

you could call Adobe customer service and they could activate your product over the phone because they could prove you purchased the previous version of the product

I think that the answer is no.
I installed CS as an upgrade from PS 6. This was not installed, I just registered the serial number of PS6, and CS installed no problem. As your PS7 was registered it should be OK.

I just registered the serial number of PS6,

I don’t recall, was there a place to type in the 6 serial # or did you have to insert the disk? I THINK I had to insert my v6 disk (full) when I recently reinstalled XP and CS. (It was only a week ago, you’d think I rememeber. Must be getting old! Sheesh!) I mean I DID insert the disk (which the CS install picked up just fine), but I don’t recal an option like "click here to type in qualifying upgrade serial #".

There isn’t.

Hasn’t been ever that way in past either.
Upgrades always need previous version on HD or ask for you to insert qualifying media.

Sorry, that wasn’t very clear. I registered PS6 first without loading it into the machine. I then installed CS using the serial number supplied. I then activated CS, and I wasn’t asked either to insert the qualifying media, or to enter the qualifying serial number. It just activated!
Was I lucky, or did the Adobe activation system rely on my registration of PS6? As far as I know, there is is no difference between an update version and a full version CD. It certainly isn’t labelled as an update.

once you install, no more verification is required. it’s during installation that you need to either have the program on your disk, or insert qualifying media. the only other way around this is a special code gotten directly from adobe (usually for upgraders from pre version 5) where the cs install won’t recognize the old media.

I don’t know. As described above.
