Hey guys,

Any opinions on using a 20" flat screen (CRT) television as a monitor?

I notice some graphic cards are available with a "video" output as well as vga. Is this and a cable all that is needed?

Thanks

Cheers Lee O.

Yep. I’ve done this. The picture is crap.

A standard television is a very low resolution device; the typical resolution of a TV signal is not even as good as a monitor set to 640×480.

Yes. However, if you set the output to a resolution higher than 640×480, you’ll likely be quite disappointed by the image quality.

For work with programs, like PS, I think you will find the resolution lacking. For video work, it would be OK. The ideal for video would be a triple-head setup with 2 21" CRT monitors and, say a 30-35 television monitor for the playback aspect.

Thanks Tacit and Hunt.

I was just sitting here and realized that my tv has been virtually unused for several years now and might be put to another task. But resolution is very important so I’ll look for an alternative.

Thanks again, Lee O.

Basically no. The image is too low quality for Photoshop, even for tool palettes. But give it a try and see if you agree.

There are other possible uses. A TV monitor might work well as a second monitor for gaming, as a preview device for editing videos, evaluating interlacing for images destined for broadcast, or for watching podcast videos. Photoshop comes with an NTSC profile that you can use to generate and display reasonably accurate NTSC colors.
