I have this 12" x 12" 300ppi psd file that I cannot save as a jpg file, which I need to do.
I have no problem with other files of the same family, just this one. I have tried it on two different systems with PS7 and while it looks like it saves it and goes though the proper procedures, when I close and re-open I get the box saying that it could not open because of an invalid jpg marker. I’ve tried saving it as a tiff file then jpg, no luck. Purged rebooted, all that. I’ve tried different format options, but no luck.
I’ve seen this discussed before in here. Any help would be appreciated.

CMYK and grayscale are both legal and correct in the JPEG standard. It seems rather odd and stupid, but it is part of the standard.

If it’s just this one file there’s probably something wrong with that file. Try copying or dragging all the layers over to a new document and work with that.

Why is greyscale ‘stupid’? IF the picture information doesn’t need colour, why have a much bigger file? You can save at a higher ‘quality’ and still have a smaller total file!

Tried that, no luck. I’ve been on this all morning. To add, It’s now four files that I’ve come across.
two of them are from a burned dvd. I copied them to a folder and unlocked them. The other two are
files I created in corel draw and exported as psd files. I’ve done it a ton of times so it’s not a corel prob.
It’s very strange. I converted one of the psd files to a jpg in AcDsee and them brought it into PS to resize.
When I save it and reopen it, blammo, I get the invalid jpg marker window. I know this has been a problem in the past with people, in fact I’ve even had the problem, but it seemed to go away for some reason.
I went through PS help and they have nothing on it!

Yes, they’re jpg’s. Not jpg2’s. The one’s I’m having a prob with, I originally did them in PS.
This is pretty crazy. I’m trying all kinds of stunts to make them jpg’s, lol What’s strange is I just saved one at 72 ppi instead of the 300ppi and it worked!
But not at the ppi I need them at. What a trip.

Yes, I can but it still has the same problem. What I’ve found now is that if I lower the ppi to 200ppi
I can save the file. Any higher and it gives me the jpg marker error. Strange since the psd file is 300 ppi
and all of the imbedded graphics are too!

This is kind of basic, but you can’t save as a jpeg if the file has layers or selections.

limiting it, I can’t find it. If there is something in bedded in the psd file how would you fix that?
Also, when I bump the 200ppi jpeg to 300ppi and save it as that it gives me the jpg marker error

I did take another psd photo file and saved it as a 300ppi file and had no problem.

Grayscale is kind of silly for JPEG because of the way JPEG compression works.

When you compress a file using JPEG, first the chrominance (color) and luminance (brightness) information are separated. Then the color information is quantized, using a lossy quantization algorithm; this is where the loss comes from Finally, the quantized color information and the separately compressed luminance information are saved.

JPEG works this way because of a quirk in the human eye. The resolution of the vision of a human eye to color information is lower than its resolution for changes in brightness. It is possible to decrease the accuracy of the color information in an image without people being able to notice it much; we simply aren’t sensitive to small areas of color.

A grayscale image has no color information; it’s all luminance. JPEG compression doesn’t work efficiently on grayscale images.

Hi All

I have a had a similar problem in the past which seemed completely unsolvable until someone told me to try Irfanview. Irfanview is available as a free download from www.irfanview.com it seems to be capable of opening any image file, then just save it as a normal jpg. Best of luck with it.
