In looking at monitors they range from 1000:1 to 500:1 (what I’ve seen). What are we looking for in photography usage?

Also, the refresh rate? Does it matter for CS2 and the like? Isn’t this just for gaming? Most are between 12ms and 8ms with Viewsonic going down to 2ms.

Can someone help me understand these? Thanks

You’re talking about LCD monitors, right?
Anyway, the higher the contrast ratio, the better.

You mean response time, not refresh rate, right?
No, for photo editing, response time does _not_ matter.

Isn’t this just for gaming?

Yes, gaming and video, and maybe other applications with quickly moving images.

Yeah, sorry ’bout that. LED and response time 🙂

Thanks for the info. Zillion monitors to choose from and impossible to view them at stores because noboday carries them all. Guess it’s a leap of faith, but the ViewSonic VX924 looks like the winner.

if you are looking at CRT (not LCD) monitors refresh rates ARE important to anyone who uses a comp for long periods of time. Not just gamers. Faster refresh keeps your eyes from tiring as quickly, set it as high as you can for you monitor.
For photography the higher the res the nicer the images will look on the screen, larger size screen is nice too (at least 19") you can use smaller if you plan to put tools on a separate monitor (requires video card with that feature), also easier on the eyes.
