This is a dramatic photograph to begin with, and most of its effect is not due to a single Photoshop technique.

It has been color corrected by a very skilled person, IMHO. Try converting to Lab, sharpening the Lightness channel very drastically, and using curves to make the a and b channels less steep, effectively turning your image into a slightly colorized black and white image. Move the centers of the a and b channel to get the overall color that you want.

Mike,
Could you please clarify how to "move the centres of the a & b channels"…do you mean using the curves dialogue?
Cheers,
Paul

Cheers,

Yes. Convert to Lab mode. In the curves dialog, moving the center of either the a or b curve will create an overall color change. A small change has a large effect. In general, this sort of move is used to remove an overall color cast, and not to add one.

The a curve controls magenta and green, and the b curve controls blue and yellow. , including moving the endpoints of the a or b curve (usually both) to change the slope of the line. This will increase or decrease the amount of color. Color variation and color saturation may both be controlled this way, all without altering the Lightness of the image, and any number of dramatic effects are possible.

I think whith these stepts i can get close to this style!

I’m delighted that you’ve discovered Lab. It’s a new world.

Yes, making the shadows very deep and keeping contrast is another feature of the original example image. Keep in mind that you can curve the Lightness channel, and make your shadows more dark and dramatic, without affecting your new colors.

Other tools in Photoshop, such as Shadow and Highlight, and the various layer modes also behave differently in Lab than in RGB.

Thanks much for the tips. I tried it on a rather standard portrait photo and the effect was dramatic!

Hi Flo,

This is the tip of the Lab iceberg. If you want more info, there is a new book called "Photoshop Lab Color" by Dan Margulis that goes into detail on many Lab manipulations. One of the examples in the book – chapter 2 – involves increasing the color variation of portraits. (Search www.amazon.com for margulis lab)

The curvemeister color correction class starts this Sunday, and also deals with Lab for increasing saturation and removing color shifts, and setting skin tones.

Let me just add that I think Andrzej Dragan’s work is beautiful and I aspire to reach his proficiency with Photoshop light effects.
