using shift key when painting in a straight line from one point to another for me works only for pencil, not for brush tool or eraser; I got rid of prefs (deleted Adobe Photoshop CS Prefs.psp) and closed and restarted Photoshop but still works only for pencil.. this is a HUGE pain and I go thru this all the time with Photoshop.. (Photoshop CS/Win2000) any suggestions would be appreciated.. thanks..

5.5 and 7 work fine with all three too – another good reason -=not=- to update to CS?

What does it do ? Check out Shape Dynamics in the Brushes palette. Do you have Fade selected?

Works fine in Photoshop CS here. Click with the brush tool, then hold down SHIFT, then click again.

Please describe what happens when you do this. Since you didn’t tell us what it is doing, we have difficulty helping you.

Frances,

I tried to duplicate your example with my CS2 XP-SP1 machine, but could not. I tried all Brush Dynamics settings and also a dozen, or so totally different brushes. I can try on my CS2 W2K-SP4 machine, but I do not think I have CS still on it. If I do, I will have a go, and let you know.

In the meantime, let’s look for anything else that could be your problem. OK, you click with the Brush, hold down Shift (which one, left, or right? I know that sounds silly, but some programs do not like the right Shift key for some reason.), then, while holding Shift, click in hopes of drawing a straight line. Good so far? What are all of the settings for the Brush that you are using? Is there anything there that strikes you as a possibility? I did my test with Airbrush on/off, Opacity, Flow, and all Dynamics checked, and unchecked. Do you have any keyboard mapping installed for some other program? Does your keyboard require separate drivers for W2K? These are just thoughts on what might be causing your problem.

Tomorrow, I will try my W2K machine and either CS, or CS2 depending on whether CS is still on it. I will try and duplicate your example, but so far, I can only do it if the Shift key is released, prior to the second click – or if it is disabled someplace along the way. That said, it should also be disabled with the Pencil Tool :-{

I’ll let you know what my big machine does, though it may well be a case of, "hey, works fine for me… "

Frances,

I went back to the studio (major blizzard, 40 miles of bad road, uphill both ways… ) and low & behold, I did have CS (1) on my W2K box. I set up a new doc. and tried every combo of Brush that I could think of. The closest that I came was with Brush Dynamics checked, the line tapered, and tapered, and tapered, then finally wasn’t visible on the last Shift-click. That’s all.

Sorry,
Hunt

I believe CS2 is supposed to run on either W2K, SP4 or XP, SP2… I’m running on W2K with SP4 right now, works okay.

What exactly does it do? What Opacity is set for the Brush? How are your Brushes settings? I’m guessing you have something set in Shape Dynamics that does this.
