Been to a tutorial site that shows how to make buttons and came up with this one.
http://www.tutorialized.com/tutorial/High-quality-button-wit h-a-metal-border/10778 I get as far as making a new document, using the rounded rectangle tool but like a lot of tutorials they assume you are a photoshop know all. What I want to know is how do I bring up the settings shown on that site to get the effect I want?

No, they don’t presume that you are a know all. They do presume, however, at least a nodding acquaintance with the workspace and user interface. There are fundamentals tutorials which teach the very basic elements of PS such as this, and I suggest that you work through a few of them to familiarize yourself with the program _before_ you tackle stuff that has instructions you don’t understand because you’re clueless about the UI. Best move if you’ve got CS is to click Help|Welcome Screen, then click the Learn the Basics icon. By the time you work through that information you will have a pretty good grasp of where things are and what does what.

That said, create the basic rounded rectangle, then click on the "f" button at the bottom of the layers palette. This will launch the Layer Styles dialog, where you will find all of the categories arrayed down the left side. Clicking each one in turn will display its associated control pane on the right, where you make the settings shown in the tutorial.

Do try to acquire a bit more fundamental understanding of the application before jumping at more advanced techniques. Let’s put it this way: If you can’t understand _how_ they’re doing what they’re doing, you probably should learn more about the tool before you try that technique. Learn the basics and the rest will begin to fall into place. Then you can begin to tackle the really tough stuff, like _why_ they’re doing what they’re doing.

Cheers,
Scott

Here’s something to remember: If you’re asking a question like this, then it’s a crappy tutorial.

Here’s how you do it: Use the ‘Layer Effects’ menu at the bottom of the palette (the circle with the ‘f’ in it). Select any of the effects corresponding to the settings in the so-called tutorial. You’ll get a dialog box. On the left side of the dialog box is some check marks with titles corresponding to the settings panels in the ‘tutorial,’ and you can select those check marks to see the settings.

Optionally: At the extreme top right of the Layers palette, there’s a little tiny menu button. Click this, and you’ll see a menu containing ‘Blending Options…’ Select ‘Blending Options…’ and you’ll get the same dialog box.

HTH.
