Hi there, Michael!
Here’s another way to do this which may be more flexible:
1. Duplicate your swan layer, by dragging it to the Create a New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette. Click the top of these so that you are working on it.
2. Type Q to enter Quickmask mode.
Choose a brush and using 100% opacity, paint over your swan, zooming in if you need to, to get all of him.
3. Type Q again to exit Quickmask mode. This makes the swan into a selection.
4. Hit the Add Layer Mask button at the bottom of the Layers palette. You can’t tell that you did anything, except by looking at the Layers palette. Hang on, though. 😉
5. Click the Create a New Layer icon to .. guess.. make a new layer!
6. Drag this layer to between the two swan layers.
7. Choose a color for your glow. Choose a wide soft brush with spacing of about 30%.
8. ON this new layer you made, paint the glow right around on the edge of the swan. Cool, eh? You can change colors for the glow, or change the opacity (in the Layers palette).
Fun stuff!

Can anyone help me?
I have a photograph of a swan swimming on a river and I want to put an orange glow around it.
What’s the easiest way to do this?
