Can anyone help me?
I have a photograph of a swan swimming on a river and I want to put an orange glow around it.
What’s the easiest way to do this?

Hi there, Michael!
Here’s another way to do this which may be more flexible:

1. Duplicate your swan layer, by dragging it to the Create a New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette. Click the top of these so that you are working on it.

2. Type Q to enter Quickmask mode.
Choose a brush and using 100% opacity, paint over your swan, zooming in if you need to, to get all of him.

3. Type Q again to exit Quickmask mode. This makes the swan into a selection.

4. Hit the Add Layer Mask button at the bottom of the Layers palette. You can’t tell that you did anything, except by looking at the Layers palette. Hang on, though. 😉

5. Click the Create a New Layer icon to .. guess.. make a new layer!

6. Drag this layer to between the two swan layers.

7. Choose a color for your glow. Choose a wide soft brush with spacing of about 30%.

8. ON this new layer you made, paint the glow right around on the edge of the swan. Cool, eh? You can change colors for the glow, or change the opacity (in the Layers palette).

Fun stuff!

What’s the easiest way to do this?

1. Make a 80+ pixel Lasso tool selection extending to the maximum distance you want around the swan

2. Use Lasso (with Option key pressed) to deselect the area immediately around the swan,

2. Use the eye dropper, select the orange color from the swatches,

3. Go to Edit > Fill > set your opacity at 35 – 65% > ok.

4. There are 2 blurs from KPT 5 that I like, examples at the following link:

Camera Optics (with real circles of confusion):

Guassian weave:

Hope this helps,

select your swan, copy to a new layer, go to layer/layer style, select outer glow.
play with the settings using preview and there you go.

HI Janee,

Choose a color for your glow. Choose a wide soft brush with spacing of about 30%.

What do you mean by "spacing of about 30%"? Could you detail how to do this?

Thanks very much.

Eric.
