Smart Object Problem

I use PS CS2.
I have an image of a face (psd file) that I made up from a number of other separate images (eye, nose, chin etc).
While manipulating the face image I somehow created a smart object of all the face parts.
The directory shows it as 60Mb but when I open it the Doc size shows
1.25Mb/2.50Mb and the actual Image Size is small.
The smart object in the Layer palette shows it’s name as "Eye" which is one of the separate images used to make up the face (for what this is worth mentioning).
I cannot understand why the file shows 60Mb in the directory but opens to
1.25Mb and a different size. I have been saving back to jpeg at this size so
perhaps I inadvertently save the psd back to the smaller size BUT that doesn’t explain why the directory shows 60Mb.
When I double click on the smart object (in Layer palette) it opens only the very original separate images and then shows 60Mb as the document size but the Layer palette doesn’t show all the layers that have been used for the face image.
What is happening? Can the smart object be returned to the original layers along with all the other layers I created for different manipulation? regards
