Pshop has difficulty performing tasks of a 40Mb file. Changing the mode from RGB to CMYK freezes Pshop.

Scratcvh disk to set to startup and nothing ofr the others. I am not partitoned. Cache levels : 4
Physical memory usage: 69%

I have 512Mb of RAM with a 80Gb hardrive with 49Gb free space. P4 processor 3Ghz. PC is only one month old and worked great when I first got it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Try installing the 6.0.1 upgrade, available from adobe.

Thanks. Sorry for the typos, spell check forgot to work!

Had already installed the upgrade patch. Looks like I need to partition or stop working for good!

Partitioning will gain you little to no performance gains. You need to put the scratch file on a separate physical drive.

I’m with Voivod on this one. The best way to speed up PS is to allow plenty of fast HDD real estate for the Scratch Disk. The RAM is next, but, as you are likely to run out, regardless of the amount, you WILL use the Scratch Disk. A partition ONLY helps when it comes to defragging, and will not help any speed issues.

I’m not going to be able to help with the crashes, but it should not be happening. Something is amok. I’ve used PS since it hit the PC and, though each machine was "state of the art" at that instant in time, looking back, most were pathetic, compared to the stuff today. Having to remove ALL programs, but OS and PS, just to work on big stuff was the way it was done, back then. Even with a hotrod 486 and 512MB RAM and 2 big (1 GB) SCSI HDDs, I did work on triple-truck layouts, and never had a crash. Now, Saves were a real process, and as I could not hold more than one version, I’d have to do a tape backup, just for the danged Saves. Never had a crash!

Do you have anything at all in the background? Maybe a program, like EndItAll would help you. Even with a robust laptop, with 2GB RAM, 80GB HDD and 2-250GB externals, I have to use EndItAll for some video editing programs.

Also, you might want to trash your PREF files, and see if there is something in there, that is causing the crashes.

Good luck,
Hunt

The first thing I would do is find out what % your processor is working at without starting ps. Then after starting ps. With a 3G processor you % would more than likely be low. If it is not then you may have a bug in your system. To do this you press ctrl+alt+delete in the preformance tab (I think) you will find a graph.

A scratch disk that is on a seperate HD than your system page file would help. If you can buy 2 and use them in stripe mode with RAID

BTW: You say you have 512 of ram but looking in your list of things it seams you have more.??

REALLY appreciate this help!

Yes I do have double the RAM, forgot I added another stick when I got the computer. Not doing me any good!!!!

I have formatted a second hard drive.

I have installed PShop 8 on it. My working files are on my C drive.

Performance without Pshop = 196Mb
With Pshop open = 277Mb

and then with an 88Mb CMYK file open = 653Mb.

So I guess I now need to learn how to improve the performance. Life was so much easier with Win 98!

Sorry, should have quoted the % as well I gather.

No Pshop = 0%
Pshop = 8-13%
With a file open = 13-17%

re ps6 performance problems.

Try the old three fingered salute – hold down alt, shift, and ctrl while starting, and answer yes when it asks if you want to delete the prefs.

I have a copy of ps6 on my xp pro system, and it runs fine. —
