Can anybody offer a solution here. I try to open PS and it goes through all the normal loading processes, brushes etc. Then it disappears. Same if I try to open a photo with PS. It seems to open and then disappears. It’s a new one on me and as I use the program every single day, it’s a mystery, Anybody, please.

Version, platform, etc.? Have you tried trashing the preferences file? Any new fonts or such that might be corrupted?

Time for the old three fingered salute. Press ctrl-alt-shift (ctrl-option-shift on Mac) to delete prefs at startup time.

FWIW the preferences file is a weak point on Windows, since it apparently emulates a Mac resource file and is prone to damage.

I don’t understand. If I press CTR-ALT-Shift, nothing happens. I can’t locate my Preferences file either. Any more suggestions? And thanks for assisting me.

I am getting concerned now. I removed my PS7 from my system and reinstalled it. The same thing is happening! The prog runs right through the normal launch but then disappears. I have stuff I need to do. Can anybody help please?

Dbl-click on the PS icon on your desktop. Immediately, press Ctrl-Shift-Alt, and you will get a dialog box, asking if you wish to bypass your Preferences files, or similar. This is what you want to do.

However, before you do so, watch the PS splash screen very, very closely. There is a line of text that reflects what is being loaded. There will be an entry, just before PS crashes. See what that says. This is probably where your problem lies. It is also possible, that the Preferences deletion/re- instatement will not help, especially if it crashes during the loading of a font.

As edjh asked, what OS/platform are you using?

Thanks guys. CTR-ALT-Shift was the solution. I just didn’t realise I had to do that as PS was loading. Back in action now. Thanks again,

Yes, perhaps Adobe will fix this at some point. It’s Photoshop’s Achilles heel, and I suspect, somehow, that it is due to a re-implementation of the Macintosh resource manager, and affects the windows platform and not the Macintosh.

Any Mac folks ever have to reset prefs on a regular basis, say more than once a year?

Mike,

I know that I am going to jinx myself with this comment (getting ready for the "three-fingered salute," as I type!), but in all of the years with PS, I have only had to reset the Pref on WinPS once, and this goes back to W3.1.1. I guess that I have just been lucky – OK, I’m ready for the jinx to start NOW !!!!

I can’t remember the last time I had to reset the Photoshop prefs on my Macs. Probably Photoshop 6 or so.

Maybe I can shoulder some of the jinx by saying that I’ve had similar luck on Windows: no need to reset, ever, even though I crash Photoshop very frequently while developing plugins. I wonder if some people’s systems are set up in a way that makes them more vulnerable to a corrupted prefs file.

On the Mac I never had to reset the prefs over a period of several years. —

Mike,

Thanks for this deflection. I ran PS today, after the post, and nothing happened. Kinda’ like thinking, "hey, I haven’t lost a ball and it’s the 16th hole!" Guess what happens on the 16th. Anyway, if my PS crashes, I’ll whisper your name into the floppy drive. :-}
