I have a client who’s taken a bunch of photo’s for his new website, original image size is anywhere between 600K – 1.6mb, wants them resized and fixed so they’re better quality images which is no worries, but only wants them to be about 5-10K per image after resizing to a specific size … so far best I can get is 24k/image, and that’s after editing, resize and saving at lowest possibly quality, highest compression JPG.
Any suggestions that would help me reduce the size of the image? Thx in advance

Do you have the actual pixel size of the final images? If so, size to that, then do the Save_For_Web mode and see how small you can get them. If you have the size down, you can then play with the compression ratio.

Yuh, got the size easily enough, tweaked around with the compression and now I’m averaging about 5-7K

Cheers,

Most likely the image still contains EXIF headers, which can take up quite some space and do not compress. Do not use ‘Save as…’, but ‘Save for the web’. That will strip those headers.

Now you have a few K to play with, there is a seldom used feature of Save for Web you might find interesting. If you have any particularly important images you can use a mask in Save for Web to define areas, such as people’s faces, that benefit from more detail.

Cheers for the help
New problem now =(
First lot of images was only 20, no probs to do manually, I’ve just been handed a CD with over 300 images on it that need the same, does anyone know of a good javascript resource that might have a script in it to batch process the images?
I’ve looked into PS about recording actions but can’t seem to get the record button to work and record what I’m doing…

Maybe this helps getting the hang of actions:

Choose ‘New Action’ from the pop-up menu in the Action palette. That starts the recording.
