When printing with one color black on press cmyk? or grayscale?

Hey Guys

I was proofing some pdfs that im sending off to press for a one color job (black) and noticed that when using the seperations preview for some of the ads when I turn off the black plate there is nothing left and on other ads the cym make up some of the image…if this job is only one color on press should that be happening? or should I convert all the ads to grayscale instead of cmyk?

I always use grayscale just in case. You could of course just delete everything in the other three channels but there’s really no point to it.

I would create a spot color plate and use that.
I mean a spot color sep. If the black is coming
through as 100% black or whatever it is that
you need taking into consideration paper type,
bleed and all that then it doesn’t mater but it is
easier to be sure and not have to do so much
checking on a spot color, in theory. The best
advice is to talk to the printer that will be doing
the job.
