Probably a basic question but here goes

When I select and cut an object in layer 1 and paste it into layer 2, its position moves. This is a headacked when the object is some precise shading or something else where the original position is difficult to reestablish

So the question is – is there a command to enable the paste to be in presisely the same location in layer 2 as it was in layer 1 ?

Thanks

I’m one of those empirical "learn by doing" types. So my solution might not be the right one, but it works for me.

After I make a selection, I hit CTRL-J. That copies the selection in position to a new layer. If I would want to put it on an existing layer, I’d move the layers one on top of the other, select the upper one and "merge down".

PS: I think there’s another way, holding ctrl or shift or something down when you drag the selection to the new layer, but I’m not sure. Someone will come along with the right answer.

Hey – no problem – a useful answer deserves to be posted several times 🙂

If anyone has the answer to : holding ctrl or shift or something down when you drag the selection to the new layer.

I’d love to know

Holding down the shift key while you drag (move) a layer to another file will *center* it, which is OK if you’re moving a layer to another file of the same pixel dimensions but not what you want if moving a smaller selection.

Guns idea of putting the selection on a new layer with cntrl-j should work fine so long as you’re staying in the same document or if you are moving it to another document with the same pixel dimensions, in which case holding down ‘shift’ during the layer move will work fine, but if you move just the selection (as opposed to the entire layer) you don’t want it centered, you want it aligned.

OK, here’s another, though similar way to do it:

Make your Selection, Selection>Save Selection (now Alpha 1, or whatever), Ctrl-X (Cut), hit New Layer icon, Selection>Load Selection (Alpha1), make new Layer active, Ctrl-V (Paste). It will come into the new Layer within the Selection, and be placed exactly as it was in the original Layer.

Only holdup is that you have to Save the Selection, as it disappears when you Cut, and you want it for placement.

Ctrl-J: Layer Via Copy. Shift-Ctrl-J: Layer Via Cut. Holding down Alt while doing these gives you a Layer Naming dialog.

Shift+drag will pull a section out of one image and drop it exactly into the same spot in another image as long as the two images have the same pixel dimensions and the selected area has not been feathered until the mask falls outside the canvas.

Yes, compared to your Shift-Ctrl-J method!!! Thanks. That is one of the great things about PS – there are so many ways to do almost anything you wish. Also, a great thing about this NG – someone has a "better" way.

So very simple. I appreciate the answer.

Don’t do this.

If you are cutting and pasting between layers, you’re wasting memory. Instead, make your selection, and then use Layer->New->Layer Via Cut.

You will get a new layer in exactly the same place, and you will not waste memory by using the Clipboard.

to add to what tacit said, one of the preferences that is a must:

go Edit/Preferences/General and UNselect ‘Export Clipboard’; and you will have a clean clipboard everytime PS is restarted.

My other ‘always selected’ is ‘Zoom with Scroll Wheel’
also at General.
