Just wondering when your computer retrieves pictures from your digital camera whats your best
bet as far as how it will look printed Vs. how it looks on the screen? I know it’s normal to have
to do adjustments but if your monitor is way off and the picture is actually perfect what do you
do? Any special ways to adjust your monitor so what you see on screen is as close as you can
get without spending lots of money? My LCD monitor was to dark and it ended up that I had
to adjust settings in the video card. Now it seems great and pictures that I thought were to dark
are good now. The monitors brightness and contrast controls didn’t fix this problem but the video
card adjustments did. The monitor is new so it’s not worn out or anything. Anyway it looks great
not and pictures that I had made brighter probably didn’t need it as much as I thought.

I’ll bite:
Read about color management.
Get a color managed photo program.
Get a calibrating device.
Calibrate your monitor.
Voila.

to get the colors on the monitor to match the colors off of the printer you need to calibrate your monitor (and printer)
with CRTs you can use Adobe Gamma (which is loaded into the control panel when you install PS
with LCDs you will probably need to use a 3rd party calibration program since i have heard that Adobe Gamma does not work right on LCDs To get a more accurate calibration you would need to use a hardware calibrator

Monitor needs standard references like correct brightness, contrast and colors to display the genuine image’s information. It is done in either by visual calibration like using Adobe Gamma from Adobe Photoshop (accuracy depends on individual visual ability) or the hardware’s calibrator like colorimeter for better accuracy. It has nothing to do with good printing but you need it in order to judge and do color adjustment if needed for good printing with proper printing color management.
