You need photoshop CS or newer and a new-ish ACR (adobe camera raw) plugin. There are other programs as well.

Here is the adobe page for the plugin updates.

The trouble is, I don’t know if CS supports the D50. Adobe in their wisdom, stopped support for CS as soon as CS2 was released so you may have to update to get the D50 support

Just thinking here – has anybody tried installing the latest ARC plug-in into CS? Since I don’t have CS up and running on any machines, I can’t put it to the test. Probably will just crash and burn, but one never knows.

PS I can see Adobe’s point more than Nikon’s for changing the RAW profiles with each new camera. Suppose that they just made it better.

Like you, I thought that it was strange for the camera manufacturer to change the RAW file format for each camera, but apparently there is more to it. I believe every manufacturer is the same. e.g. Fuji S5000, S9000 and S2 are entirely different beasts. Same with Canon.

Maybe someone can explain why.

Raw Shooter Essentials (available FREE from www.pixmantic.com supports the Nikon D50. It is a stand-alone program, but the price is right. I have used it with my D70 files and it works quite well, although I usually use Adobe Camera Raw with CS2 because it is more convenient. RSE makes certain adjustments easier than Camera Raw so I still use it at times.

Easiest solution is to convert the files to Adobe DNG format using their free converter, and then open with any recent version of ACR.

Correct. The original poster can use the 3.3 DNG Converter (or even
3.2), to convert D50 NEFs to DNGs. Then ACR 2.4 under Photoshop CS will
open those DNGs.

(Those are the correct version numbers).

I tried downloading the latest DNG converter but it comes with the full ACR install. I wanted to open a D200 NEF and my older DNG converter converted it but ACR wouldn’t open it in PS CS1. Am I reading your version numbers right that an even older ACR is able to open these? I think I’ve got 3.something for both ACR & DNG converter.

I said "Those are the correct version numbers" in the hope that further discussion would be unnecessary!
