Hi everybody.

This is to let you know that I have created a new online library of illuminated and illustrated books.

It is a non-profit website and contains a selection of books valuable for their design; mainly from the 1800 to the ‘1920.

I started it just at the end of February and I am adding, time permitting, few new books per week.

There is already a decent selection of books from: Owen Jones (including the Grammar of Ornament), Walter Crane, Kate Greenaway, Evelyn Paul, Alberto Sangorski, etc.

In no long we should have more than 200 books online.

Basically, it’s a nicely designed site with reasonably high-resolution scans of lovely old books for people to view online or download and enjoy. The books are presented in their integrity from the first to the last page. There is also a section of children books.

The books are from our personal collection, but we gladly accept the contribution of other books collectors.

The URL is www.illuminated-books.com

Text and images from all books presented in this library are safe for all ages.

Great idea. Too bad I can’t see it. Typing the number that appears on the left just yields an error.

By the way, it’s "Poor Cock Robin" not "Poor Cook Robin"

I don’t know could have been a temporary problem with the server. They have a mind of their own sometime.

About the Robin name it was my fault.

The only language I learned at school was Italian. I learned by myself Spanish, French and English. But does not stop me to try to communicate with people.

I will be glad if you let me know of more mistakes, for sure there must be more somewhere.

Thanks

In the menu, ‘Children’s Books’ is correct but there should be no apostrophe in ‘Book’s Index’ in fact it doesn’t need the ‘s’ at all.

Fascinating site, Alfredo! Thank you for creating it and inviting us to view it. I quickly became lost in the "Grammar of Ornament," and found the Propositions set forth in the preface very interesting indeed. They gave me some serious grounds for consideration for the next time that I set out to work with Color Schemer. Not that everything is ornament, but the principles of color balance enumerated may be fairly applied in other endeavors as well.

Thanks again, and for what it’s worth, your English is a damned sight better than my Italian. Over the course of time, I have taken Latin, Spanish, French, and German, and could probably order a beer and find a bathroom in any of them (well, perhaps not in Latin), but little else. It seems that we Americans, or at least this American, find it difficult to "keep" a language once studied. It may have something to do with being surrounded at all times only by other American English speakers (except on our southern border). There’s just not a lot of opportunity to actually use the language once you leave school. In any event, you’ve done a great job and it is appreciated.

Cheers,
Scott

Thanks Scott,

Languages became easier to learn and keep when we are obliged; like making a living in an other country. I had some English in the middle school loooong time ago, but then not even the teacher was speaking the language. For three years we did to be, to have and learned the same list of irregular verbs. We also learned that in England it rains dogs and cats.

I started learning seriously English when I moved to Ontario in 1990 at the age of 44. At that age the learning capacities are not the same than at a younger age. I have seen my children picking-up the new language in a few weeks and with the right pronunciation every time we moved to a new country.

Thanks for the compliments on the online library; this week I will post three new books.
