Can anybody shed some light on a curious issue I have with the File browser? I’ve searched the forums but can find no previous discussion on exactly this issue.

I created a 390mb psd file on an internal hard drive. (72gb,15k,scsi). When i select it in a Windows (XP Professional) File folder it displays a thumbnail preview within 2 or 3 seconds. If I open Photoshop CS, open the file browser and select the file it takes 50 seconds. This is a new file not an existing one where the preview may have previously been cached.

Seems strange that the native application takes longer to generate a preview than a third party app does.

Any thoughts,

Sandy

it’s not using windows thumbs, but generating it’s own. once done, they’ll be cached and the slowness will go away. not to mention that cs’s thumbs are high quality and color managed.

Thanks Dave,

I can see where the extra quality and colour correction would delay the generation. Is colour accuracy in a thumbnail really necessary?

The slowness does go away once it’s cached but even if you alter one pixel on the file then the preview is generated again with the looong delay. Is there a way to prevent the thumbnail being re-generated after "every" correction. An "Update Thumbnail" button would be nice.

I often have to work on many very large files, altering, re-saving, opening, and this delay in preview generation can really impact on the speed in which I can navigate between images.

Just musing, I workaround the issue by using the Windows Exploreer and drag & dropping the files.

Cheers,

Sandy
