I was searching for photo host sites a few weeks ago and found one called http://www.photostockplus.com/

They insisted on seeing some of my stuff before they would give me info about them, so I sent them a load of Irish scenic photos. Then tonight I received this mail.

Hi Eugene,

My name is Peter and I am a Pro Services Manager at www.photostockplus.com. One of my editors has recently reviewed your work and has brought to my attention that you have some powerful and beautiful nature/landscape pictures of Ballintoy and Benevenagh.

We feel you can do very well with our site and we want to encourage you to upgrade your account to PRO status. For only $24.95 a month or $99.95 a year you will be able set pricing to all your images and sell them online from your personal homepage modeled after your user name

I Googled it to see if was yet another scam but I can’t find any negative info about them. Has anybody worked with them or know anything about them?

thanks,
Eugene

Legit stock companies DO ask for a portfolio to review and specify a certain number of images to start.
BUT they pay YOU for usages. My company pays 50% if you pay for scanning, 40% if they pay.
But No up front money.
Sounds like a scam to me
if you really want to check, have a friend send some really crappy images and see if they get the same letter

Their selection does look pretty good though.

I have to admit I already checked out your site when you first posted because I thought your post might be a rather clever and oblique piece of Spam!! my apologies as I soon realised you did indeed have some very nice images on your site and had only posted to two groups on the subject!! Difficult to get an idea of the quality of the images though as the image size is so small! – although there is no doubting the quality of the subject matter!!

What do you mean the images are small Harry? Do the thumbnails not open when clicked? I assumed that anybody having a look would be able to open the various sizes on offer, but maybe that’s restricted to me when I sign in. Whatever, this should give you a decent look at them all

I subscribe to the Flickr website and the C.A.F.E. group in particular! I have a free account which limits me to 1024pxl wide images! but here is an image from a pro (paid for) account, taken at random from the group which indicates how closely images are examined for quality (not casting any aspersions here you understand, I’m sure yours are perfection) http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=118561196&size=o

Hi Eugene,

I just noticed that on your Flickr page all your images are set at 800pxl wide, if that is the size you sent to the stock website then I suspect they are just trying to get money from you!! most stock sites want images 20+ megabites in size!
Katwoman will no doubt know the exact sizes as I believe she is a regular contributor to some of them??
